Description
Recorded at Applehead Studios, “Reversible Submersible” blends the spontaneous spirit of improvisation with rich, analog textures shaped through a meticulous production process. The addition of Jason Fraticelli (RAaR, Matisyahu, MM&W live collaborator) on electric bass rounds out the quartet, adding depth and propulsion to the groove.
John Medeski’s electric organ and clavinet swirl with psychedelic flair, while Billy Martin provides the rhythmic anchor with his unmistakable pulse and polyrhythmic flow. Fraticelli locks into the low end with warm, fluid bass lines, creating a grounded canvas for Joshua’s searing guitar work and effects-laden tones.
“This one was about going deeper,” says Joshua. “Where ‘Blurry Face’ was a lightning strike—a live take frozen in time—‘Reversible Submersible’ is like navigating the ocean floor with a headlamp and a dream. We shaped it, sculpted it, layered it. There’s intention behind every sound.”
With additional mixing by Jonathan Plum (London Bridge Studios) and mastering by Joe Lambert, “Reversible Submersible” balances the rawness of a live band with the detail and nuance of a cinematic mix. From outboard gear FX to stereo trickery and warped textures, this release reveals new sonic layers with each listen.
This track continues a rich series of collaborations between Joshua, Medeski, Martin, and Fraticelli—musicians whose roots in jazz, funk, and the avant-garde run deep. With more tracks on the horizon and talk of a full album release, “Reversible Submersible” marks another evolution in the journey.
